The Blues boss is aware of his club’s hectic fixture list during December and would like to have Group E all wrapped up before they entertain Steaua Bucharest next month.
Mourinho said: “We have so many matches in December that if we can have one less – and the one less is the match against Steaua – it would be a help.
“We are going to try to win. In the end if you get a point you qualify but we have to try to win the game there.
“Also, because it was not a good feeling to lose against them at home so to try to win against a team that beat us at Stamford Bridge I think is important.”
Chelsea’s December schedule sees them play nine times, including Premier League matches against Southampton, Arsenal and Liverpool, but Mourinho says he enjoys the nature of the English schedule.
“It’s a period I like. It’s a period where I think only the braves can survive because it’s hard,” he added.
“We go into the Christmas period and the accumulation of matches is so high, we don’t do it as a normal thing, we do it as a special group with a special mentality, enjoying the situation, forgetting we don’t have a Christmas (break) like the Spanish, Italian and German players. We don’t have that.
“But we have the pleasure of playing a period that’s only for the braves. I like that very, very much.
“I enjoyed it when I was in England and I missed it when I was in Spain and Italy. Now I’m back I want to enjoy it, I want the players to enjoy it, and we need a special mentality to cope with that situation.”
As for the match against Arsenal, he added: “Let’s see how we arrive there. Who knows in which position we are and they are on December 23?
“Maybe they are third and we are fifth? You never know. In this Premier League, anything can happen. Just play match after match and see what happens.”
